[2]
Obit: 1461. Death of Patrick MacGregor of Glenstray at Stronmelochane [4] Eoin Dubh, son of Padraig, (d 24th. May 1519) married as one of his wives Ealasaid from Glen Lyon. [5] 2 January 1433/4 (ibid., 202) witness: Malcolmi Johannis gregorii = Gille-Coluim mac Eoin mhic Ghriogair witnessed delivery of sasine (in Latin) in the Glen Orchy lands to Cailean Campbell. This is consistent with Malcolm the chief being a son of Eion dubh and grandson of Gregor of the golden bridles. [6] 16 October 1434 (AT) Alasdair mac Eoin mhic Ghriogair w. resignation by Eòghan mac Eòghain MacCorquodale, lord of Phantelan, to his overlord Donnchadh Campbell of Loch Awe. [Alasdair, second son of Eoin dubh] [7] 20 October 1432 (Highland Papers iv, 200) 'Gregorio Johannis' [= Gregor son of John] witnessed a latin charter of the Glen Orchy lands by Donnchadh Campbell lord of Loch Awe to Cailean Campbell. It is possible that this Gregor could be the ancestor of the MacGregor lineage in Ardinconnel in the Gareloch. Descendants took the name Stewart in 1609 and went to Ireland. The family is ancestral to Lord Castlereagh

Comments by Neil MacGregor Tearlach Kerr is the son of Duncan as per the Deans book. Duncan Charlissoun is a tenant of Robert Menzies of Enoch in a series of documents in 1484-1492 along with Gregor duncanson. So I would suggest that tearlach ker is a son of Duncan who is a son of John the vicar and part of the fortingall line. This would also explain why he is mentioned with prominence in the Deans books where as the second and subsequent sons of the Glenstrae line are not mentioned. [Neil MacGregor] 26th October 1484. The Lords decree and deliver that Johne Stewart, Robert Menzeis, Robert M'Nare, Alexr. Finlawsoun M'Gillomartin, Donald M'Giltairr, Johne Rede Mengies, Finlaw Croy, Finlaw M'Amdy, Finlaw M'Nare, Robert Rede, Finlaw M'Antalzor, Fand Millar, Andro Finlysoun, Duncan Campbell, Marion Campbell, Gregor Duncanson, Duncan Charlisson, and the remnant or rest of the tenants and inhabitants of the land of Aberfeldy and Dalrawer, shall consent and pay to William of Rothune of that Ilk, Knight, the iiialis of the third of the two part of the lands of the Lordship of Weyme of the Whitsunday term gone past, and also that the said persons, with the tenants foresaid, shall content and pay to the said Sir William the ' malis ' and dewties of the two part of the land of the said lordship of ' Weyme ' of the said Whitsunday term, pertaining to him by reason of assignation of a Rev. father, William, Bishop of Aberdeen, Sir Mungo ' Lokert,' Mr ' Dauid ' Cuperdale, and Mr Alex. Tower, Archdean of Dunkeld ; and ordains that the bailies there to distrain said persons and tenants their lands and goods for the said malis, and they were lawfully summoned to personally appear, and having been oftimes called and did not compeer." — Acts of the Lords of Council^ Civil Cases. One of the tenants of Sir Robert the Menzies, Duncan Charlisson, who was on the list of those who had not paid their " mails" in 1484, was again, in 1492, for some offence not mentioned, brought before the Lords of Council by virtue of a summons from Sir Robert, who, not appearing, the case was allowed to drop, as follows : " June 22. Before the Lords of Council appeared Duncan Charlisson, and pleaded that because Robert Menzies of the Enoch gert summons him at his instance for certain actions contained in the summons, and would not compere to 'folow' him there before the Council." — Acts of the Lords of Council, Civil Cases, P- 237- 2 January 1434 (ibid., 202) witness: Malcolmi Johannis gregorii = Gille-Coluim mac Eoin mhic Ghriogair w. delivery of sasine (in Latin) in the Glen Orchy lands to Cailean Campbell. This is consistent with Malcolm the chief being a son of Eion dubh and grandson of Gregor of the golden bridles. 16 October 1434 (AT) Alasdair mac Eoin mhic Ghriogair w. resignation by Eòghan mac Eòghain MacCorquodale, lord of Phantelan, to his overlord Donnchadh Campbell of Loch Awe. NB: This refers to Alasdair McEion VcGregor – this means that Alaster cannot be son of Malcolm as we have suggested in the latest tree and is indeed a son of Eion Dubh. 14 March 1449 (Breadalbane Muns., SRO GDll2/75/l) Pàdraig MacGregor of Stronmiluchan w. grant by Eoin Stewart lord of Lorn to Sir Cailean Campbell of Glen Orchy. This is Patrick the chief the son of Malcolm. 17 December 1470 (AT) Eoin MacGregor of Stronmilchan is one of six men (described as “our beloved kinsmen”) addressed in a precept by Cailean earl of Argyll, to deliver sasine, as his baillies, to Sir Cailean Campbell of Glen Orchy, in one third of Lorn and other lands. This is John the subsequent chief, Patrick’s son. 21 June 1501 (Ibid.) Eoin Campbell is one of four baillies addressed in a precept by Gill-easbuig earl of Argyll, to deliver sasine to Donnchadh, natural son of Cailean Campbell of Otter, in the 40 merklands of Otter. Martin interprets this Eion Campbell as Eion McPatrick the chief at the time. 18 August 1502 (Ibid.) Eoin MacGregor of Glen Strae w. charter and precept of sasine by Gill-easbuig earl of Argyll in favour of Donnchadh Campbell of Glen Orchy, in lands of Knapdale. Once again John McPatrick the chief. 4 June 1536 (MacGregor, Coll. (Menzies Writs), SRO GD50/186/IIv). Alasdair MacGregor of Glen Strae w. gift by Gill-easbuig earl of Argyll to Eoin Campbell of Glen Orchy of the ward, relief and non-entry of the lands held by the Glen Orchy chiefs of the earls of Argyll. 12 December 1545 (AT) Alasdair MacGregor of Glen Strae w. contract providing for marriage of Gill-easbuig earl of Argyll with Katherine, daughter of Eachann MacLean of Duart. 12 April 1546 (Ibid.) Alasdair MacGregor of Glen Strae w. bond of manrent by Uilleam MacLeod of Harris to Gill-easbuig earl of Argyll. |
