[1] Jan. 3, 1690 -Lieut. Col. Donald McGregor in Glengyle and John Buchanan of Amprior entered into a bond of friendship, founded as particularly stated, on consanguinity, Donald's paternal grandmother having been a daughter of Buchanan of Carbeth, by a daughter of the Laird of Buchanan, in which bond Lt. Col. Donald became bound "for himself and all those of his family commonly called the Clan Duilichere" on one part and Amprior "for himself and all those descended of the family of Mochaster" on the other.
The time of Lt Col. Donald's death is unknown. He married a daughter of Campbell of Glenlyon. He had a daughter married to Alexander McDonald 2d son of the McDonald of Glenco who lost his life in the Massacre of Glencoe and three sons.
1. John his heir.
2. Duncan mentioned on record August 1689, when the Council gave an order to liberate Duncan McGregor from the Tolbooth of Edinburgh on his taking the oath of Allegiance and binding himself to appear before the Council when charged, under a money penalty. March 13 following, the Council passed an order in favour of Duncan McGregor tenant of the Earl of Menteith and prisoner. "Duncan McGregor son of Donald McGregor in Glengyle witnessed a bond of impignoration of certain lands by Archibald McGregor of that Ilk to Gregor Roy McGregor in Pollichroe, Jan. 4, 1694,
3. Robert afterwards the celebrated Rob Roy of whom a memoir will subsequently be given.
VI. John McConnel Glas, eldest son of Lt. Col. Donald Glas McGregor in Glengyle, granted along with Duncan McGregor in Monchalbeg, to Archibald Edmiston merchant in Doune in Menteith, who had arrested John McGregor in Bunrannoch for a small debt, an obligation to present the said John to the said Archibald against the term of Martinmas under penalty of £100. Feb. 12,1691,-" [page 259] John McGregor in Glengyle" and "Archibald McGregor in Kilmanan" were appointed to command a watch for the protection of the Estates of certain heritors in the western part of Stirlingshire and the eastern part of Dumbartonshire with power of fire and sword in pursuance of a Commission from the Privy Council, enjoining the Heritors to keep a watch. John McConnel Glas died about 1700. He married first a daughter of Drummond of Comrie by whom he had no family and secondly a daughter of Campbell of Duneaves by whom he left a daughter, Catherine, married to Walter Graham of Brachern, and two sons,
Gregor his heir
Donald who died without issue.
VII. Gregor McGregor of Glengyle, born in 1689, who in his own name but with that of his uncle Robert or Rob Roy as his Attorney obtained from the Marquis of Montrose aftenvards first Duke, a feu charter of the Estate of Glengyle of which they had previously been only tenants. 25th May 1703 -Gregor thereafter assumed in civil life the name of James Graham in compliance with the proscription of the name of MacGregor. His subsequent life will be noticed later, but it may here be mentioned that having a dark spot on one of his knees he was familiarly known amongst Highlanders as Gregor Ghlun Dhu, or Black Knee.

[2] 1 - In 1677 John Leckie of Croy-Leckie married Margaret MacGregor, sister of Robert Roy Mac Gregor of Inversnaid, making the Leckies a sept and under the protection of Clan Gregor.
[The date of 1677 is impossible as John Leckie was baptised 27/11/1666 at Gargunnock. I suspect it should be 1687 - so I have adjusted it accordingly.]
The Leckies lived in an area where there was much cattle rustling and herding from the highland to the lowlands. The MacGregors were deeply involved and no doubt the Leckies were also. The Leckies appear to have always been religious but in those days cattle rustling was a honourable profession - if they didn't get caught. The Leckie lands were just south of the River Forth - seven miles west of Sterling and about fifteen miles east of Loch Lomond and the family was scattered between Leckie and Loch Lomond. The north side of the River Forth, from Sterling to Loch Lomond at that time was one big swamp or bog - except for a small area close to Leckie where they could pass. It was a passage for troops as well - so they must have had to be on guard at all times.
3 - LECKIE, the surname of an old family in the county of Dumbarton. The head of the family, at the beginning of the 18th century, was John Leckie of Croy-Leckie, in that county. He married a daughter of Macgregor of Glengyle by his wife, a daughter of the first William Campbell of Glenfalloch, by whom he had several children. He was proprietor of the lands of Croy-Leckie, afterwards the property of Mr. Blackburn, and of the lands of Balvie, which became the property of Mr. Campbell-Douglas. Having joined the cause of the Stuarts with his brother-in-law, Rob Roy, in the rebellion of 1715, his estates were forfeited, and he fled the country with all his family, except the youngest son and a daughter, who remained in Scotland. This son, Thomas Leckie, minister of the parish of Kilmarnock from 1703 to 1723, married Janet, daughter of James Buchanan of Catter, parish of Drymen, now belonging to the duke of Montrose. The daughter of John Leckie married James Maxwell of Merksworth, Renfrewshire, from which marriage the Maxwell-Graham family (of which the 13th countess of Buchan is a daughter), is descended, as are also the Blacks, sometime of Clairmont, near Glasgow.

[3] Stewart, JH thesis 1986, Highland settlement evolution in West Perthshire ; page 151, A contract dated 12th February 1706 is of interest [3]. It was with Robert Roy Campbell of Inversnaidt formerly surnamed MacGregor. He was to take possession of the lands of Monachyle Tuarach as tutor of law to Donald Murray, son of the late John MacGregor of Glengyle and the lawful possessor of Monachyle Tuarach on the south shore of Loch Voil. The, contract was for the duration of Donald Murray's minority, to be taken up by him when of age.

[5] The source of John, the son of Duncan and grandson of Donald glas is uncertain (I can't find it when producing this note, but I have it from somewhere)
A family in New Zealand approached us with images from a family bible which mentioned a Janet (d.1819). married to Daniel (1740-1808) and farming near Methven, Perth. Their son John (b. Aberfeldy 1784 and d.1839) married a Christian McDonald on 18/5/1812 and had son John born at Cherry, near Perth 6/7/1813. Janet is claimed to have been a niece of Rob Roy. I suggested that Janet (b 1743) would be a great-niece of Rob Roy

With the probability of "Daniel" actually being an English speaker's understanding of hearing a monoglot Gaelic speaker saying "Donald" (in the Gaelic vocative case: Dhomnail = Gon-yil) there are four possible Donalds recorded 1739-1741
Two of them are in Killin, the parish to the north of Balquhidder where Janet was from (and the bible account claimed that "Daniel" was also from), the other two are from Dull parish which included the village of Aberfeldy where their child, John, was born in 1784. I am inclined to think that Dull is more likely. There are no Donalds baptised in Fowlis Wester parish 1739-1741. The Donald below in Killin parish is the only one recorded in the county of Perth as baptised in 1740.

OPR Baptism: MCGRIGOR, DONALD; DUNCAN MCGRIGOR/MARY MCINNES; M; 28/09/1740; 361/10 155 Killin

Looking at these two families in Dull parish, I am inclined to pick the second for two reasons, firstly the name John and secondly a late baptism in 1741 might could be from an actul birth in 1740.
