[12] According to Gordon MacGregor in the Red Book of Scotland, Vol 6
The MacGregors of Glencarnock are said to descend from Duncan Ladosach MacGregor who was executed with several of his sons by Campbell of Glenorchy in 1552, although that is entirely doubtful.
Instead, it is far more likely that the father of John MacGregor, 1st of Glencarnock, was Patrick MacGregor of Carnlea and Dalveich who had married by 29 January 1659 to a daughter of John Murray of Cowden by his wife, Marjory, natural daughter of Mungo Murray, Master of Stormont. [RD3/496.]
Although that Patrick’s parentage is uncertain, the continued possession of rights to the lands of Dalveich is good evidence to prove that he was the grandson and heir to Duncan MacGregor alias Drummond of Kingarth and Dalveich, younger son of Patrick Duncanson MacGregor of Innergeldie, who removed from Glenledock and settled at Dalveich at the northwest end of Lochearn in the first half of the 17th century.
JOHN MACGREGOR OF GLENCARNOCK, is in all likelihood identical with John MacGregor, only son of Patrick MacGregor of Carnlea, who was cautioner to his sister, Margaret’s daughter Mary MacGregor in an obligation by which she was to receive 500 merks Scots upon reaching twenty-one years of age, dated 28 July 1691. He assumed the surname of Campbell on account of the proscriptive acts passed against the Clan Gregor and acquired rights to the lands of Glencarnock, in Balquidder glen, from Murray of Atholl.
